Description

The Pacific Northwest Salmon Center and the Theler Center will be hosting an official ribbon cutting ceremony to open trails along the restored Union River Estuary on Friday, October 25th, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, along the new trail at the Theler Community Center in Belfair.

In partnership with Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, Recreation and Conservation Office and United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group and Pacific Northwest Salmon Center have successfully restored over 30 acres of estuary habitat. With the breaching of a dike that had been in existence for over 70 years, salmon will be provided with pristine estuarine habitat. Estuaries an integral environment for salmon as they transition between saltwater and freshwater, aiding in the recovery of the threatened summer chum on the Union River.

In addition to restored habitat, recreation opportunities have been added for community members with the expansion of walking trails along the restored area, adding nearly one half mile of new trails.

Staff from the Pacific Northwest Salmon Center, along with staff from other involved organizations, will speak briefly about the restoration before officially opening the two new bridges on the trails. Following the ceremony, staff will be on hand to answer any questions.
